This guide evaluates published information. It does not report our own product measurements. Our editorial standards
Illustrative equipment graphic; not a photograph of our test unit.
Start with your actual inputs
Write down what you need to record at the same time. A vocal microphone and a guitar require a different input arrangement from a full band. Check the manual for the number and type of simultaneous inputs, rather than relying on the product name.
Check the complete connection
Verify the supported operating-system version, driver requirements, USB connection, and included cable on the manufacturer’s support page. A matching connector alone does not establish compatibility.
Look beyond a single latency number
Published latency measurements only become useful comparisons when the computer, driver, sample rate, buffer settings, and measurement method are comparable. We do not rank products using unmatched test conditions.
Budget for the whole setup
Include any required cables, headphones, microphone, stand, and recording software. Check which included software is a permanent license, a limited version, or a trial.
